About

the band

Blunderbusst’s moody optimism oozes through the dissonant obstinacy of 90’s-inspired melodies and jangly guitars cutting through a post-apocalyptic chasm, with the din of echoing slowcore running beneath the clouds and a dripping and syrupy dream pop being collected in just the right amount of neo-psychedelic contraption rock to keep anyone engaged.

Songwriter Jen Scaffidi (vocals, guitar) and Carolyn Gates (drums) started making pop-inspired noise in northern Nevada way back in 2005. Carson Cessna (guitars, synths) came aboard around the turn of the decade, and somewhere along the way the trio-sometimes-duo’s well-made haphazardry gelled into a viable, vibey rope bridge sufficiently closing the gap between intimate, vulnerable songwriting and blistering, reverberant, and sometimes disorienting shoegaze.

Scaffidi’s songs have the open nerve of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers and the pop-readiness of Brandi Carlile, while maintaining the honesty of Chan Marshall leaving you hanging in open space. Around them, the guitars and synths make their own weather: the low haze of Hope Sandoval’s Mazzy Star, the cloud-soaked chamber pop of Jason Pierce’s Spiritualized, and the beautiful malfunctioning groove of Mark Linkous’s Sparklehorse while you’re overly conscious that a screaming crosswind of The Jesus and Mary Chain might blow through at any moment.

After the 2019 EP Monarch of the Mountain (Slow Start Records, Austin) and the 2022 single “Jim Croce Goes to Lilith Fair,” Blunderbusst spent the summer of 2026 crossing the country as the musical guest on Puppeteers for Fears’ Robopocalypse: The Musical! tour. Killer appliances, singing puppets, and an opening set from Blunderbusst, live, every night.

The dust has settled, but the noise hasn’t. Back in Nevada, Blunderbusst is tracking its next full-length and still working up their next gust of wind.

“An excellent slice of rock.”

“Going from shoegaze angst to mumble rock to sparse desert Americana over six tracks coherently is impressive.”
